The Underground Railroad on Long Island

Read the February 4, 2014 Long Island Press article: “Slavery and Salvation: Long Island’s Underground Railroad,” by Spencer Rumsey discussed some of the still remaining vestiges of Long Island’s participation in the Underground Railroad by the Quakers. They used their “Long Island Society of Friends” group to hide fugitives in plain sight from the slave bounty hunters until they could move on to freedom.
